NCS Product Synopsis Update: December 08, 2004 «©NCSX» Yoshi treks into the wild once again, newly spirited into a special cartridge with a tilt-motion sensor molded into the plastic. Translated as "Yoshi's Universal Gravitation" and spelled out in English on the title screen, Yoshi's movement in his latest outing is entirely decided by moving the GBA/GBA SP/NDS to set the green beast in motion. Before starting a game, a tutorial shows the proper way to tilt the handheld to get Yoshi rolling - players may practice by rotating a stone around to get a hang of the mechanics.
Once the game proper begins, players will quickly realize that it's all about moving the world around Yoshi and not the other way around. The green lizard exerts very little action and it's the objects, platforms, and vessels in the game world that are manipulated to send Yoshi on his way. Make him jump on a sphere and roll it downhill or set sail on a ship and move the world/waves so that the vessel avoids obstacles or grabs bonus items. The rolling mechanism takes a little practice to get used to but gamers already attuned to the shenanigans in Mawaru! Made in Wario will catch on quickly. Fun, light, and gimmicky, the new Yoshi game takes a chance with new ways of control in a platform game and fares well enough to score 35/40 in Famitsu.
