D.I.Y. Movie Card II (1999, Gamars)
Open Box Video-CD Decoder PSOne SCPH-9000
This item was found in a box of customer returns from the year 1999. The note attached to the package reads, "Customer unable to install, returning for store credit." Since the customer opened the item, we couldn't put it back on the shelf and threw it into a returns box where it lay dormant for the past 25 years. A fairly high level of technical proficiency is needed to install these cards so it's not recommended for anyone who's only had a passing knowledge of soldering and working on a motherboard.
We used to install these cards but it was not an enjoyable experience due to the cramped working space of the PSOne motherboard. Forcing the Video-CD board to fit inside the PSOne case was also a daunting and tedious process. Since there are easier ways to watch Video-CDs nowadays, we supply this item more as a curiosity piece for collectors to add to their Playstation shrine of obscure accessories.
Please note: The installation of the Playstation mod-chip is required. The mod-chip allows the PSOne to read unsigned discs (Video-CDs) and this video-cd decoder will not work unless the mod-chip is installed.
The original install diagram from Gamars is the last photo in the product gallery if you want to take a shot at installing this card.
NCS Product Synopsis Update July 11, 1999 «©NCSX» Internal movie card which installs inside the PS One SCPH-900x console and allows the viewing of video-cd movies. The movie card also supplies cheat code card functionality and all other Action Replay options - a code disc is included, containing hundreds of cheat codes to use with this accessory. Installation requires soldering, fairly involved wire wrapping, and careful mounting of the video-cd daughterboard on top of the PSOne motherboard. The squeamish need not apply. NCS can install the video card for a service charge of US$55 but PS One consoles must be sent in. Update 08/03/24: We no longer provide the install service.
