Publisher Rockstar sez:
They just killed Cash. Now, they want to kill him again. America is full of run down, broken rust-belt towns where nobody cares and anything goes. In Manhunt's Carcer City, nothing matters anymore and all that's left are cheap thrills. The ultimate rush is the power to grant life and take it away, for sport. This time, James Earl Cash, you are the sport. They gave you your life back. Now, they are going to hunt you down. You awake to the sound of your own panicked breath. You must run, hide, and fight to survive. If you can stay alive long enough, you may find out who did this to you. This is a brutal blood sport.

Continuing in Rockstar North's tradition of world-class gameplay with high production values and sardonic humor, Manhunt explores the depths of human depravity in a vicious, sadistic tale of urban horror.

NCS Impressions
«©NCSX» Once major media and the usual groups gets a whiff of Manhunt
(Give it 3-4 years after the fact), they'll consider GTA innocuous. Remember that big hullabaloo about the violence in Grand Theft Auto? That's nothing compared to Rockstar's latest. Succinctly, Manhunt is a gruesome, violent and most importantly, a foul experience. Filthy. Rotten. That said, it's also very well designed and a guilty gaming pleasure. If you're not careful, you're liable to love every single minute of it.

Players take control of a roughneck named James Cash who essentially plays hide 'n seek 'n kill with a bunch of out-of-control gang members, mercenaries and other well-armed, raving loons. The game is all about stealth and killing from the shadows. Fighting an adversary one-on-one is basically suicide since he will call his buddies over and they'll all bash at once. When a situation like that occurs, it's possible to flee and hide in the shadows until they lose sight of Cash's hulking heft and become complacent again. Then, it's back to hiding in shadows and killing them one by one... like the designers of the game intended.

In later levels, Cash gets a hold of some firepower and the killing changes from stealth to gunfights. Stealth head-shots are also possible - when stalking a hunter with a gun, the firing cursor focuses on the body of the victim. Sidle up close enough however and the cursor targets the head. Firing a shotgun at close-range will perform a gruesome decapitation as chunky ejecta splatters against the adjacent wall. Filthy.

Manhunt is rated "Mature" and it takes full advantage of the rating. All the blood, gore, language, and themes that may be found in an R rated film are found in Manhunt. There's a disturbing room in the "DIVIDED THEY FALL" level where two corpulent corpses are hung upside down on meat hooks. Run past the bodies and they'll tumble and shake like bloated carcasses. Throughout the game, there are other depictions of corpses that are hung by their necks and others who are covered in bags and hung upside down. Then there's the rantings by gang members and hunters - we've identified one type which wears a dress and act like the "women" in the game. They're male but apparently serve some special gender role in the criminal underworld. They say some disturbing things... There's a jail level where a "dinner party" is apparently taking place and Cash ruins the whole shebang by shooting everyone. Some of the amusing rantings during this stage include (we're going by memory here) "Meet the Cunninghams," "If you don't like the borscht, throw it out!" and other inane sayings from the creative minds at R*.
