NCS Product Synopsis
Update: April 11, 2006
«©NCSX» Scribble Chinese characters aka kanji on the two designated areas of the touch screen and Kanji Sonomama DS Dictionary brings up their meanings in Japanese and English. Character entry may also be doodled in katakana, hiragana, or English if you're so inclined. The software is useful for new pupils and fluent Japanese speakers alike. For example, if you're in China or Japan and see certain signage but don't want to wander into a brothel by mistake, write down the characters from the sign onto the NDS screen and realize that it's just a Capsule Hotel. The kind you sleep in. By yourself for a mere ¥4500.
Japanese
Fluent Japanese speakers will find the Kanji Sonomama software useful when their fuzzy memories need a little refreshing on characters that aren't seen everyday. The versatile character recognition software is highly impressive, with the ability to render chicken scratch characters into their bold-faced and properly formed counterparts on screen. Even if there's an approximation of the kanji character, the recognition routine will lock onto your writing and then present the proper kanji character in boldfaced type and then present a list of related characters with the main target character at the top of the list. Click on the kanji that you just wrote out and its meaning will appear on the upper NDS screen.
The software is very good but it's not all powerful. If your poor kanji formation skills cause the character to criss-cross at the wrong juncture or intersect at an improper line, the software won't recognize it and razz you with a discordant sound. If you attempt to write the character again and do it properly, the software rewards you with a chime.
English
For participants who are interested in improving their English writing skills, toggle the mode to Roman alphabet and write English letters on the two designated panels on the touch screen. For example, if you wish to find the definition of "fish," write "f" in the first panel followed by "i" in the second panel. Go back to the first panel and write down "s" followed by "h" in the second panel. Done. The software keeps track of your letter input and the word "fish" appears and you may click on it to obtain a definition. A voice speaks each letter in sequence until the complete word is spelled and then spoken with the proper pronunciation. For English words, the definitions are presented in Japanese but they are used in sentences which demonstrate their proper grammatical usage.
Features
The software boasts a 95,000 word dictionary and proper pronunciations for 13,000 English words which may be listened to with a tap of the stylus. A 700-question quiz mode in the game tests the proper grammatical use of characters and the meaning of words. A picto-chat function is available to query local Wifi participants with language questions.
This item is also known as Just Kanji DS Dictionary.
