NCS Product Synopsis
Update: July 10, 2009
«©NCSX» Japanese patrons of gaming shops will be waiting on long lines later today for their chance to purchase a copy of Dragon Quest IX. Despite some misguided fears from distribution agents concerning a potential lack of inventory to go around, there's many thousands of copies available in the distribution channel to meet demand. We checked.
Dragon Quest IX marks the first time that a canonical game in the legendary series has debuted on a portable gaming system. This tells us that the Nintendo DS has reached such a massive user base that it's the only viable platform upon which Square can release a game that will eventually surpass a million units sold. That's no small feat in the current global climate of fear and reckoning. We've been asked to write a spoiler-free synopsis for DQIX today but we might update the shop listing with details and notes over the weekend as we explore the game.
Please note the screen captures linked below may contain spoilers so please don't scroll down if you don't want to view the introductory sequence, the character creation screens, or the first battle.

NCS Preorder Synopsis
«©NCSX» A few Japanese distributors have started preorders for Dragon Quest IX but not to everyone. According to them, they're currently only offering the game to their high-volume customers since the release will apparently be in demand. NCS has been trading for a while now and we're generally jaded to such sales hype but then again this is Dragon Quest. Japanese fans are likely willing to camp out and wait on line for any DQ game by the hundreds of thousands so the hype might be warranted.
We know how many copies we'll be getting so we're opening up preorders today. NCS doesn't anticipate any shortages or supply issues but as they say in Brooklyn, "Ya Neva Know 'Til Ya Know."
Preorders for the Japanese DS import Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no Mamoribito will ship on July 11, 2009 at JPY5980 or US$70.90 from NCS.
