NCS Product Synopsis Update: December 20, 2002 «©NCSX» Story Chocovader starts off in your room with a little robot that you have created for the school robot battle competition. Later in the school hallway, the school bully takes your robot by extreme force. While in class, a meteor crashes near the school and causes a miniature earthquake. Curious schoolmates roam outside to investigate but an access path is blocked by a sinister Man in Black. The school bully attempts to push his way through but gets knocked on his ass by the MIB. You also attempt to battle the MIB but are also knocked flat. As the kids disperse, you walk to an adjacent junkyard and are teleported to different scenes in a netherworld as well as places in your own town. When trying to leave the junkyard, a weird sensation hits you, causing you to turn back and pick up some special items amongst the junk. Since you're such as mechnical genius, you create a weapon and a shield capable of defeating the MIB from the parts in the junkyard.
Once the MIB has been defeated, you explore a little further and come across a purple alien creature who attacks you. After defeating the creature and saving it from certain doom, it joins your party and provides much needed muscle. A number of random encounters with MIB agents follow but once you defeat them, the true adventure begins...
System Space Operation Chocovader is an action-adventure game which uses an interesting battle system where players may press "A" at the time of impact to increase damage power or push "B" when an enemy attacks to blunt the level of damage taken. A wisp of a shield appears when pressing "B" to show that you're glancing the blow away. A perfectly timed attack will increase the hurt from your blow by 50% while a perfect defense will halve the force from an attack. Combo attacks are also available where you chain an attack with a party member to increase the damage level.
Review Certainly one of the more pleasant surprises from 2002, Space Invader Chocovader was one of the few adventure games that staffers at NCS played all the way through. Clean, crisp graphics and an involving UFO storyline were the main draws. Namco researched their UFO history well by taking real-life accounts of alien creatures from around the world and incorporating them in the game. A few made-up aliens (well, they're all made up if you're a skeptic) are also found in the game to increase the variety of creatures.
Greys are featured as well as little green men, attractive blonde Venusians, a purple octopus creature and even the Mothman makes an appearance. Mothman was reported in an account from West Virginia in 1966 while the purple octopus was reported from Argentina in 1984. Namco boasts 100 different types of aliens which you'll encounter over the six chapters of Chocovade. Up to six extra-terrestrials may join your party and rotation of members will help your cause as you advance to later levels.
Chocovader is an enjoyable adventure game for fans of UFO lore and plays well. Breaking the game up into episodes with certain objectives allows Namco to move the player around the country where different scenarios occur. Our hero travels to New York in the third chapter and Los Angeles then Nevada in the fourth chapter. We'll leave out the rest before we spoil everything for players. Enjoy the screenshots linked below - we've posted 30 of them. Fans in Japan may link the GBA version of Space Operation Chocovader with the Namco coin-op game "Uchuu Daisakusen: Chocovader Contactee" which was manufactured in 2002.
This game is also known as Uchuu Daisakusen Chocovader: Uchuu kara no Shinryakusha
