NCS Product Synopsis Update: July 6, 2006 «©NCSX» The NDS version of Brave Story starts in an apartment building where an 18-year-old player-named character in a brown hoodie is unpacking his belongings when a neighbor barges in and starts a conversation. We named our protagonist "Shiro" in kana. The character name may also be entered in kanji if so desired. The main character of the game lost his mother at an early age and as a result of the trauma, lost his childhood memories. Later that evening, Shiro walks in on a gang of ruffians beating down a boy named Mitsuru. After the trouncing, the sirens of an ambulance may be heard when a glowing red sphere drops at Shiro's feet. The beaten boy rouses himself up and introduces Shiro to a mystical world known as Vision where he is regressed to 13 years of age with the same brown hoodie. Wide-eyed and wondering about his new predicament, Shiro embarks on an adventure through Vision and eventually teams up with Wataru from the Brave Story novel where he finds himself in a tale that hews closely to the source material. A second team-up character named Mitsuru (from the intro) is also selectable which allows the gamer to play through an entirely new storyline.
At the outset of game play in Vision, Shiro stands in a cloudy realm and the first action is to tap on the forest clearing in the distance. After entering the area, the protagonist finds himself in forest facing a cavern. The stylus is used to poke a pink circular cursor around the screen to select which areas to visit and explore. When the cursor changes from circle to asterisk shape, that indicates that a location on the screen may be interacted with - be it a door, a creature, or an object. A series of icons lined across the bottom of the screen allow Shiro to talk, inspect, use an item, save data, etc. As the protagonist travels, the movement is viewed from the side and as interaction sequences open up, the view changes to full screen depictions of the object, action, puzzle, or in-game sequence.
