NCS Product Synopsis Update: June 21, 2006 «©NCSX» Building on the Kollon game from 2004, publisher Cyber Front updates the puzzler with new modes and an improved visual layout. A total of eight characters are featured which animate and step lively on the side of the screen as the puzzle action rolls along. The gist of the game is this: control a 2x2 grid overlay and use it to rotate 2x2 groups of colored crooked-smiley-face blocks. The aim is to create matches of at least four contiguous blocks around the cluttered playfield. When a match is made, the blocks will start spinning and that's your cue to try and rotate more like-colored blocks to touch the morass or ignite other color combinations elsewhere. With so many blocks on the board at any time, chain combos are ripe for the making as little matches have the potential to turn into swarms of block-busting chains. A wrinkle in the game comes from blocks that merge and become irregularly shaped or too large for the standard 2x2 grid overlay to rotate. When this happens, color combinations must be made next to the odd blocks in order to fade them from the screen.
While the color-matching is happening, the conglomeration of blocks on the screen slowly moves upwards as new squares are added to the playfield. All games pit the player against a COM-controlled character in a split-screen playfield. The Arcade and Campaign modes make up the main game options but two players may also link up for an ad hoc Versus Mode challenge. For new players unaccustomed to the play mechanics, a Tutorial Mode teaches the ways of block rotation and techniques for triggering combos.
