«©NCSX» Capcom was once the king of 2D fighting games but the torch has been passed to young(ish) turks such as Arc System Works and Type Moon of Melty-Blood fame. Last year, Capcom hired Arc System to develop a new 2D fighting game based on the characters of Sengoku Basara and the location tests were for the most part positive. Since the game was originally built on Namco's 246/256 arcade hardware, Sengoku Basara X (Cross) is expected to make a smooth transition to the Playstation 2 when it's released later this summer.
Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura lead a cast of 10 characters (Chousokabe Motochika, Honda Tadakatsu, Maeda Keiji, Mouri Motonari, Uesugi Kenshin, Oichi お市, Oda Nobunaga, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi) who use weapons and special attacks in a 2D brawler that's evocative of Arc System's other works. The control scheme uses four buttons to lash out a weak attack, a medium attack, a strong attack, and Engun which calls upon a supporter or striker to rush into the battlefield and provide offensive assistance. The longer you hold off on calling for support, the stronger that support becomes when it is eventually summoned.
The limited edition includes a Character Voice CD which contains 31 minutes of speech and a set of 47 Theme/Character Trading Cards.

Region Lock-out
Please note Japanese Playstation 2 games will not boot on USA or European PS2 consoles due to the inherent region-lockout on Playstation 2 game discs.
NCS Game Notes
» The intro to the game features an animated sequence where Date, Sana, Oda, and others are in action. The production values are not bad and pretty much routine for a coin-op game introduction.
» Press START on the title screen and the following options appear (All in English):
ARCADE - Enjoy the coin-op original version of the game
VS 2P - Fight against a second player that's sitting right next to you
VS CPU - Test your skills against COM-controlled combatants
TRAINING - Practice moves and combos against a dummy without fear of a time limit or counterattacks
CHALLENGE - Meet certain objectives in 1-round fights against a procession of fighters
GALLERY - Illustration, Movie, BGM, Voice, Title, History
OPTION - Game Options, Key Config, Sound Settings, Display Settings, Ranking, Save/Load
EXIT - Return to title screen
» Most of the sections in the GALLERY are locked but you can check out two movies and listen to the BGM. You'll have to play the game to unlock the other sections however.
CONTROLS
SQUARE - Weak Attack
TRIANGLE - Medium Attack
CIRCLE - Strong Attack
CROSS - Call on supporter/striker
R1-TRIGGER - Hold for charge
R2-TRIGGER - Taunt
» When playing the game, the two combatants' supporting characters appear in the background. To call upon him/her, the gauge underneath the supporter's portrait must be red
» Twelve fighters are featured in the game. Some fighters are by their lonesome such as the flamboyant Chousokabe Motochika while others have a partner. There are three characters who have two supporters with them such as Oda Nobunaga.
» Either the D-pad or L-Analog stick may be used for movement. The d-pad is preferable. Actually, a Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 is the best choice for this particular game.
» The lone girl character in SBX is named Oichi. She may appear frail and helpless but she has some underhanded attacks. You might even say she's got a lot of helping hands.
» To view the move list for your fighter at any time, press the START button and select the "COMMAND LIST" option to check out special attacks such as the Death Fang, Magnum Step, and War Dance (in the case of Date).
» There is a 15-second recording feature in the TRAINING MODE where you can store 15 seconds worth of gameplay to memory for playback later. To activate it, press the L1 trigger once and "Standby" appears on the screen. Press the L1 trigger again to start recording. To play back the saved sequence, press the L2 trigger once.
» Maeda Kaeji literally lies down on the job at the outset of every battle. When Maeda wins a match, one of his supporters throws out a towel on the ground and they have a picnic.
» When playing as Honda Tadakatsu, the armored fighter is nearly as tall as the height of the screen and feels like he has real weight when moving. He can fire cannonballs from the turrets on his back and Honda has a move where a single cannonball is fired and hangs in midair. To activate it, hit it with a slash from Honda's lance and it'll be sent forward as a projectile attack.
» The action is very smooth, very fast, and typical of Arc Systems' handiwork. There's a crispness to the controls and responsiveness that's pleasing. The sharp visuals of the game are also beautifully done. Check out the pristine movements of Date Masumune when he's fighting. All in all, the game looks and plays rock-solid. We piped the game through an XRGB-2 to a VGA monitor for our play test this morning.
