KOF MAXIMUM IMPACT 2
More and more amazing content awaits.
This is the second 3D KOF produced by FALCOON.
KOF Maximum Impact 2 is the second installment of SNK's 3D KOF spinoffs. Produced by FALCOON, who designed the new characters in the previous title, this sequel features a newly written storyline and online battles that used the online service multi-matching BB (now defunct,) and greatly increased game content from the previous title.
STORY OF KOF MAXIMUM IMPACT 2
In the final match of the King of Fighters held in South Town, Alba Meira defeated standing ruler Duke; the latter summarily vanished from the city along with his organization, Mephistopheles. With the help of his brother (Soiree) and other allies, the newly crowned "king" Alba brought peace back to the city.
Then one day a mysterious beauty appears before the Meira brothers. Though this is their first meeting, Alba and Soiree are beset by a strange sense of déjà vu. She attempts to speak to the pair, but it is a language they don't understand. At last, with an exasperated, if not telling sigh, the woman vanishes from the scene.
From that day forth the twins begin having inexplicable dreams. On many a night they see the gorgeous starry sky over Schwarzwald—the very one that they had gazed upon in their youth. They can recall nothing else from the dreams. Despite brushing it all off as fantasy, a sense of unease niggles at their minds. Who could that beauty be? Doubt grows ever heavier in Alba and Soiree's hearts.
Just as the pair think they can finally forget the fierce battles that had taken place, invitations to a new King of Fighters reach them. With the tournament's scale now even greater, the brothers presume Fate's killers—Lien and Duke—will join in the action. As if trying to distract themselves from the disturbing memory of the beautiful woman, they dive headfirst into the heat of battle.
Game Intro
»» In the introduction cinema, the classic Neo Geo logo appears followed by the camera panning out on a neon-lit rendition of the logo. A blonde pixie named Nagase leaps into view and inserts a disc into the clunky CD player on her wrist. Someone needs to tell her about the obscure device known as the iPOD. Looking down towards street level, she spies Ryo Sakazaki and Andy Bogard engaged in a street fight while a crowd circles them. Ryo gets knocked the chuck out but he makes a comeback and smashes Andy twice in succession - the second blow sends him into a light pole which becomes warped. The scene shifts to a guy throwing a basketball behind his back and missing the hoop when he's confronted by Billy Kane with his segmented weapon. They fight. The next scene features the big bouncy boobed Lien Neville as she battles Nagase in a fast paced bout. Nagase leaps on top of a limousine and throws an invitation to Lien who snatches it. Other invitations reach their targets such as the Meiras, Iori, etc. At the end of the intro, a surfer dude type drawls, "Maximum Impact Twooooo."

Normal and Another Character Configuration
»» Every character features two forms that may be used in STORY MODE or PRACTICE MODE - a NORMAL type and ANOTHER. Some examples:
» Mai Shiranui is her red costumed self in NORMAL mode but in ANOTHER her hair is dyed brown and she wears a black costume. Her thighs are exceptionally large and jut out as much as her breasts do.
» Lien Neville wears a black and yellow outfit with mass cleavage hanging out in NORMAL mode but she dresses up as a cowgirl sheriff of some sort in ANOTHER. Her prodigious bosom is laughably awkward in the cowgirl getup.
» Mignon Beart is dressed relatively conservatively when NORMAL but turns into a sex kitten (literally) in ANOTHER.
» Perhaps most radically changed is Clark Still. He is normally a white dude in flak jacket but he becomes a shirtless black guy with buzz cut in ANOTHER. K' also transforms into a black man and Ryo Sakazaki undergoes a noticeably darker shade when in ANOTHER mode.
» Nagase's outfit is critically bad in NORMAL but it gets worse in ANOTHER where she wears a frog cap and snake-head gloves.
In the case of some of the men, the ANOTHER mode turns them metro-sexual and shall we say, flamboyant...
»» Along with the two forms, four color variations for every character may also be chosen.
Button Scheme
»» Default button assignments:
L-PUNCH / SQUARE
S-PUNCH / TRIANGLE
L-KICK / X-BUTTON
S-KICK / CIRCLE
L.P+L.K / R1
S.P+S.K / R2
PROVOCATION / L1
SABAKI / L2
»» Only the D-Pad is used for control. Analog is out. Again.
General Musings
»» The fighters tower at least half the height of the screen and some tower as much as 3/4 of the screen. The controls are fast and responsive with easy chaining of attacks and combos. Nagase has a weird attack where she sits on an opponent's prone buttocks and then beats it a few times before knocking the fighter forward. Like the original KOF games in the series, KOFMI2 is a 2D fighting game but there's a pseudo 3D element where a character may rotate around an opponent by pressing and holding the R1 button. The actual fighting takes place only on a 2D plane. Although the fighters never get too far away from each other due to the enclosed nature of the battlefield, the camera accommodates the action smoothly as fighters range near and far and rush in for the kill. The control feels substantial and the fighters have weight to them as gamers move and jump around.
»» When we pitted Mai Shiranui against Lien Neville, the obvious attractions swung and swayed with each and every breath the girls took.
»» In Story Mode, a scrolling detailed storyline for each character updates gamers (in Japanese) on past events and the current situation. Before the actual battle starts, the fighters do a little trash talking as they strut, jump, and roll onto the stage. Winnings are also celebrated with a saying.
»» Sixteen stages may be battled on but only 8 are available at the outset of the game. Each stage also has two variants each.
»» There's a Max Gauge on the bottom of the screen that gathers energy and scales levels as your hits connect with opponents. One Maxxed out, it turns a shimmering yellow. Super cancellations and super moves are available for fighters to hone their attack and defense.
