NCS Product Synopsis
Update: September 11, 2003 «©NCSX» Before Shinji Mizushima became a force in manga, the prolific artist peddled fish for a living. A passion for story telling and baseball eventually led Mizushima to the offices of the Kachibon Manga Kage agency where he got his start in the manga industry (circa 1958). In the late 60s, Mizushima began what would become a long line of baseball manga starting with "Do Ahou Koushien" and continuing to the legendary Dokaben series in 1972 and "Otoko Do Ahou Koushien" in 1999.
A familiar assemblage of memorable baseball characters such as the aptly named Fujimura Koushien of "Do Ahou Koushien" and the mighty Taro Yamada of Dokaben fame are included in the manga cast of Gekitou Pro Baseball. Taro Yamada was a great catcher with a strong arm and Mizushima lends him and 29 of his other baseball stars from twelve assorted manga series to Sega for a game which melds live action polygon players with cel-shaded manga icons. The look of the two graphic styles may appear disconcerting at first but the clash resolves (or maybe it just becomes acceptable) after a while. Gameplay consists of standard pitching, batting and fielding the ball. Anime cut-scenes are common during the course of a ballgame where players talk, dramatic plays are captured in exciting fashion and managerial decisions are conveyed with exacting force and manga style. For the real Japanese players, updated 2003 season data is included and for the manga players, recent career stats are provided for a fantasy league baseball flavor where some manga heroes are obviously desired for inclusion on your team.
