NCS Product Synopsis Update: April 22, 2004 «©NCSX» Set in the comfortably far-off year of 2049, biological weapons are apparently the norm and three skilled killers are offered up for infiltration missions in Crimson Tears. The storyline is rote but somehow Capcom always pulls it together convincingly with solid execution and impressive visuals. Crimson Tears uses a sharply drawn cel-shaded style which is remarkably crisp and clean. Once the action begins, players may choose from three action heroes - Asuka, Kaede and Tokio. Weapons include wolverine claws with three gold blades for Kaede and dagger-like weapons and swords for Kaede and Asuka. The male character Tokio mainly uses projectile armaments which shoot out lightning-like strikes and blazing fogs of hazy fire. Kaede can heft a sword that's even bigger than FFVII Cloud's massive cutter. The girls get up close with their weapon attacks while Tokio swings a gun to and fro for his offensive attack. A chain combo system links hits together while a counter keeps tabs on the amount of consecutive hits.
A level-up system also keeps track of experience and levels with clear onscreen messages as fighters go through the game. Objects in the environment are breakable and many give up power-ups. As the fighters level up into ever more powerful forms, new special moves are added to their arsenals. Hack 'n slash games tend to become monotonous after a while but there's a good variety of moves and power attacks in Tears to keep things interesting. Bosses in the game are an uninspired lot - there's one who looks like Dural v5.0 and another which may be described as a crab-tank with heavily armored shell and arms.
